Wide Open Roads of the North – Developing a Motorcycle Tourism Cluster in the Peace Country

Community Futures Peace Country along with the Mighty Peace Tourists Association is developing a motorcycle tourism cluster in the Peace Country region. Motorcycle tourism is a fast growing industry with approximately 171,000 registered motorcycles in Alberta and British Columbia and 536,000 in the north-western United States. Riders tend to be relatively affluent and prefer to stay in hotels and motels as opposed to camping. Motorcycles also tend to provide good fuel economy which means that riders are less impacted by high fuel costs than many traditional tourists. Indeed, the purpose for many riders is not just to reach a destination but also to take a scenic route with many stops on the way.

The objectives of this project are to:

  • Diversify the Peace Country economy through creation of a motorcycle tourism cluster
  • Leverage an industry advisory group to create a “Rider Friendly” tourism culture
  • Grow wealth in new and existing businesses through a new market opportunity

Partners include: Community Futures Peace Country, Mighty Peace Tourist Association, Travel Alberta North, Community Futures Grande Prairie & Region, Belt Drive Betty and The Busted Knuckle Chronicles, Geo-Tourism Canada, Forgotten Jewels of the Peace Tourism Association, Peace Region Economic Development Alliance, Fairview & District Chamber of Commerce, Podollan Inn & Spa, Stanford Hotel Grande Prairie, Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre, Dee-Jay Motel, and Velocity Video Productions.
